May is one of those months that comes in and sneaks up on you without warning. We all know December is crazy and August is typically a little hectic too. May is for the most part, the last month our children are in school. There are end of the year events, special field trips, teacher appreciation day, birthday parties and the list goes on. The most important thing though is, “What are my children going to do this summer?”.
Of course there are summer camps, sports activities and other events that your children will be potentially attending this summer. But what about the whole “Summer Slide” when it comes to education? We can accept the idea that school is ending and there’s no more lunches to pack or getting to school at the crack of dawn, but what about the education component. They’ve worked so hard all year to be a little bit further in their educational career. The last thing we want for our children is for them to lose all the the great progress they’ve made this year.
In the meantime, we wish you luck as you organize for the summer. Don’t let May crush your soul. And use the following tips as you press on:
- Consider scheduling in a little time for mental health. 10-20 minutes of meditation time, yoga class, a walk outdoors or a phone call with a friend can be rewarding and help you to boost your mood in a very stressful time of the year.
- Don’t overschedule your time. You know a few things will pop up from your child’s school at the end of the year. Prepare for this by leaving a little extra leeway in your schedule this time of year.
- Identify friends and family members you can vent to. Take a step back and realize there are people out there that you can lean on or even just vent to when needed. We have to remember we can’t always DO IT ALL ourselves and we don’t necessarily even need to.
