Limiting Technology Time During The Summer
This summer, we all want to try to limit technology time for our children. But let’s be honest from time to time as parents, we need our kids to watch a television show or play a game on a device, so that we are able to get something done or take a few minutes of sanity for ourselves. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with letting our children play a game now and then. The key is to have balance between the games our kids want to play and the education time we want the to have.
To obtain a little balance, try suggesting learning games that can also be fun! ABCYa.com is a great resource for kids up to 5th grade with a variety of learning games. Adaptedmind.com has many math and reading games for 1st grade through 8th grade level and each lesson can be selected by the area you’d like your child to improve in. Or try Word Streak, which is a game similar to “Boggle”. Both sites are great ways for your child to continue learning while they also feel like they are getting a little “fun time” for themselves.
You can also suggest your child read a book on their tablet or even listen to an audio book. Doing either activity can have great benefits for your child. Reading Rockets suggests that listening to an audio-book can teach critical listening, highlight the humor in books and also is a way to introduce new genres that kids may not have considered otherwise.
The truth is, too much technology could be affecting our children’s developing brains. If you’d like to read an article about this topic, we found an interesting one here on Wired Magazine: https://www.wired.com/2010/05/ff-nicholas-carr/
